31 maj kl 11-12:45 – The Youth Movements’ Toolbox to Transform our Future

Room: Palmesalen

Hey adults, what do you want to say? Should I, a child, take responsibility for the consequences of the fossil fast that you partied your way through? We are many youth asking ourselves this today. What opportunities do young people have when it comes to advocacy and how do they make their voices heard on a local, national and global level? Does children and youth engagement vary across the world? Listen to youth representatives from Ladakh (India), Brazil and Sweden talk about their engagement, how they are affected by global environmental issues both physically and mentally, and their opportunities to influence on an local and global level. The panelists will also talk about what they think is needed to create so-called ’social tipping points’. Young people want to be part of the just transition, but the responsibility is too heavy to carry alone.

Moderator: Elias Aspudd, Plan international former Swedish UNA.

1 juni kl 10-11:45 – For whose benefit? A critical discussion of corporate power in free trade

Room: Sandler

To properly convey the permeating nature of corporate power, we invite a wide variety of speakers to our event, in order for them to share their perspectives on the issue. Perspectives from local and Indigenous contexts are central to the narrative that we wish to convey, which is why we have invited a speaker from a local community in Uruguay. Since 2019, the governments of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay have together with the EU Commission pushed for the EU-Mercosur agreement to be ratified after 20 years of preparation, even though it has received strong opposition from South American and European civil societies due to climate, biodiversity and human rights issues. The coalition Stop EU-Mercosur, with over 450 civil society organizations from Europe and South America, was launched in March 2021, followed shortly thereafter by its Swedish branch, Stop EU-Mercosur Sweden (SEMS). Since its launch in September 2021, SEMS has been advocating for Sweden to stop supporting the EU-Mercosur agreement and instead advocate a trade agreement based on respect for climate, biodiversity and human rights. The member organizations of SEMS acknowledge that the corporate power issues present in the EU-Mercosur agreement permeate other legislation and agreements supported by the EU. With this event, we want to highlight the need to fundamentally change how multinational corporations gain power at the expense of nature and human rights in international agreements, especially
on free trade.

How can development aid not only tackle hunger, femin and environmental degradation but also support and scale up support to initiatives that are key to much needed future transformation?
