Women in Ladakh prepare yarn for dyeing. The yarn will then become pashmina shawls.
Women's Alliance of Ladakh
Increased status of women in the Himalayas
The Women’s Alliance of Ladakh has more than 5,000 members. The organization works to increase women’s status and self-confidence by having meetings in the villages and arranging education in various crafts to give women an opportunity for their own income. The organization, which consists entirely of women, also disseminates information about how important it is to grow organically and to manage the water supply in the harsh landscape.
The Women’s Alliance also runs a small shop where they sell jams, marmalades and beautiful crafts made by women’s groups in the various mountain villages. The surplus from the store goes back to the organization’s operations. Together with Ladakh Amchi Saba and Ladakh’s Friends, the Women’s Alliance is also working to strengthen traditional medicine.
